Every year on 15 August, Cerfontaine hosts the Marche Saint-Lambert, one of the famous Napoleonic folk marches of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region. This event pays tribute to the region's military and religious history, with companies of soldiers in period uniforms, a squadron of horsemen, and a parade to the rhythm of drums and fifes. The history of the Marche Saint-Lambert
The Marche Saint-Lambert de Cerfontaine has its roots in the Napoleonic era. Cerfontaine was one of the villages in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region incorporated into France between 1793 and 1815. The march was created to pay tribute to the local conscripts who fought in Napoleon's Grande Armée. Some of the survivors were awarded the Croix de Sainte-Hélène, which can be admired at the Musée de la Vie Régionale in Cerfontaine.
Walk schedule
The Saint-Lambert Walk follows a specific programme every 15 August:
- 10.00 am: Mass
- 11.00: Departure of the procession
- 12.30pm: The procession returns
- 8.00 pm: Companies and squadrons return to work
The participants, dressed as sappers, grenadiers, gendarmes, zouaves, voltigeurs and artillerymen, parade in uniforms reproduced with great concern for historical accuracy. The cavalry squadron, unique in the region, is one of the highlights of the day.
